![]() It was after De Niro read boxer Jake LaMotta's memoirs that he knew he wanted to make the film, so Scorsese and De Niro turned to Paul Schrader for a script. It dwindled in production hell for quite some time, with Scorsese's drug use halting production and only the duo's strong willpower that kept the project moving ahead. It came out in 1980, earned Robert De Niro a Best Actor Academy Award, and was marked down as another solid triumph by director Martin Scorsese, whose previous 1976 outing with De Niro earned them both critical acclaim (and for De Niro, an Oscar nomination, although he would actually earn an Oscar for "Raging Bull" four years later). Like most great movies, its focus is much deeper. Everything about it is perfect and this movie alternates with Taxi Driver and Goodfellas for Scorsese’s best."Raging Bull" isn't the average, stereotypical underdog boxing movie, because it isn't really about boxing at all. When the movie ended I just sat in my chair for the rest of the credits thinking about what I had just witnessed. I just love how Scorsese crafted this movie, the way the many themes are seamlessly woven into the story is masterful, the cinematography is beautiful. Obviously the rest of the cast and characters are great as well but I just had to dedicate a paragraph to De Niro and that character.įrom a filmmaking perspective this movie is flawless. I think that this is De Niro’s best performance, hell it might even be the best I’ve ever seen period. ![]() The man is really awful, he’s a pedophile, he beats his wives, and he’s got a whole laundry list of horrible qualities that push him beyond the point of redemption. The way his insecurities manifest themselves is so toxic and so horrible to watch yet so compelling, it’s like the car crash you can’t look away from it just grabs your attention. Jake LaMotta is one of the most intriguing characters I’ve ever seen in a movie.
